The stoneware jar is decorated with an applied flowering branch and fitted with a cover moulded as a lotus leaf. The vessel is covered in a blue glaze, with the base left unglazed to reveal the dark brown body.

For a comparable use of a cobalt-blue ground, see the large Yuan dynasty charger with an applied white-slip dragon and clouds, offered by Littleton & Hennessy Asian Art at TEFAF 2014, currently on loan to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Its raised white decoration contrasts with the rich blue glaze, further illustrating the interplay of relief ornament and colour in Yuan ceramics.
